HOMA-IR (Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance)

HOMA-IR is a useful, validated method for evaluating insulin resistance (IR). IR is reduced physiological response of the peripheral tissues to the action of insulin. It is one of the major causes of type II DM and compensatory hyperinsulinemia with consequent development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Therefore, a reliable measure of IR is important for the prediction of the metabolic syndrome (glucose intolerance, hypertension, central obesity, elevated serum TG and low serum HDL cholesterol.)
