"Capillary Electrophoresis" advanced accurate method for protein and Hemoglobin electrophoresis

Two types of disorders may affect globin chains of hemoglobin; quantitatively and qualitatively. Thalassemias are the quantitative disorders affecting the rate of hemoglobin synthesis; the β-thalassemia carrier state is a benign condition with mild anemia, red cell hypochromia, microcytosis and an elevated HbA2 level. Qualitative disorders, i.e. hemoglobinopathies, result from any substitution or deletion of a portion of amino acid(s) or fusion between chains during meiosis as in of sickle cell (Hb S) or Hb C disease.

The diagnosis of thalassemias depends greatly on the detection of elevated HbA2. Accurate measurement of the minor HbA2 (α2δ2) is imperative for the diagnosis of β-thalassemia trait in which HbA2 represents 3.8 and 7.0% of the total hemoglobin.

Accurate measurement has been facilitated by the recent development of Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) using the FDA approved & first choice of College of American Pathologists (CAP) Sebia CAPILLARYSTM2.  Which provides the precision, accuracy, linearity and correlation with an automated HPLC system that gives an excellent alternative to HPLC techniques in detection of thalassemias and hemoglobinopathies in addition to its sensitive detection of any minor abnormalities at the beginning of the disease shown by protein electrophoresis?

The CAPILLARYSTM2   provides the following advantages over HPLC system:

Enhanced resolution with an excellent separation of variants plus an accurate quantification of HbA2.

Early detection of variants such as sickle disease or β-thalassemia major with Clear separation & precise quantification of Hb F. which has an important therapeutic consequences early in life, for the appropriate application of transfusion, augmentation of HbF production and chelation therapy which can dramatically improve the course of disease in the patients.

Easily identifying closely migrating Hb S and D as well as distinct separation of Hb C and E from Hb A2.

an effective technique for detection of monoclonal gammopathies and other common protein abnormalities in serum HPLC techniques require special instrumentation, training and result in patterns that are relatively complex in comparison to fully automated Sebia CAPILLARYSTM2

Capillary Electrophoresis is now available only in ALFA LABORATORIES and the result is within 3 days.
